Karl Rove leaked Valerie Plame's Name

President Bush's chief political adviser, Karl Rove, told the FBI in an interview last October that he circulated and discussed damaging information regarding CIA operative Valerie Plame with others in the White House, outside political consultants, and journalists, according to a government official and an attorney familiar with the ongoing special counsel's investigation of the matter.

Bush to Limit Interview with 9/11 Panel to an Hour

The panel investigating the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States will get one hour to ask President Bush what he knew about events leading up to the suicide airline hijackings, the White House said on Friday.
"They are looking at an hour as you pointed out," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said when asked by a reporter whether he could confirm reports that Bush was limiting the meeting to an hour.
Rather than sitting down with all 10 members of the so-called 9/11 commission, Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have only agreed to meet privately with its chairman, Thomas Kean, and the vice chairman, Lee Hamilton.
The panel would prefer that Bush meet with all of the members.
Created by the U.S. Congress, the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States is charged with examining lapses in intelligence and national security in the months before the attacks. Strikes by hijacked airplanes on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon killed about 3,000 people.
The White House initially opposed setting up the commission and until recently openly resisted its extension.Reuters

Dallas City Council condemns USA Patriot Act

Dallas on Wednesday became one of nation's largest cities to formally condemn sections of the federal USA Patriot Act as unconstitutional and a threat to the civil liberties it says it defends.
The vote came after a highly emotional two-hour debate among council members and audience members.
"They say the majority of people support the Patriot Act," council member James Fantroy whispered into his microphone. "But I remember when the majority was for slavery. I remember when the majority was for segregation.
"The majority is not always right."
"I never expected it to pass," added Randeep Walia, a Dallas resident who attended the debate. "This will give more momentum to the larger effort."
The council will transmit the resolution to leaders such as President Bush and Attorney General John Ashcroft.

Years Of FBI Agent Crimes Detailed

An internal FBI report kept under wraps for three years details dozens of cases of agents fired for egregious misconduct and crimes, including drug trafficking, attempted murder, theft, misuse of informants and consorting with prostitutes.
-An agent who was abusive to his family and used his FBI weapon to shoot his wife, resulting in attempted murder charges.
-Several agents who had improper sexual relationships with confidential informants or prostitutes, sometimes in FBI vehicles.
-One agent pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the killing of a female informant with whom he had "an inappropriate emotional and sexual relationship."
-Agents who disclosed sensitive or classified material to outsiders, including representatives of foreign governments and criminal enterprises.
- One agent stole more than $400,000 in informant funds to feed his gambling and drinking problems; another used crack cocaine regularly and was arrested for possession of crack pipes.
-An agent who attempted to sell cocaine to someone who turned out to be an undercover FBI agent.

FBI tipster says he broke law

A confidential federal informant claims an FBI agent instructed him to break the law as part of the government’s terror investigations in Metro Detroit.
In a Jan. 21 letter, written at the airport as he left for an undisclosed foreign country, informant Marwan Farhat said he was asked by FBI Special Agent Robert Pertuso to steal mail from Arab Muslims whom the federal government had identified as terror suspects.

Bush Grabs New Power for FBI

While the nation was distracted last month by images of Saddam Hussein's spider hole and dental exam, President George W. Bush quietly signed into law a new bill that gives the FBI increased surveillance powers and dramatically expands the reach of the USA Patriot Act.
The Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004 grants the FBI unprecedented power to obtain records from financial institutions without requiring permission from a judge.
Bush signed the bill on Dec. 13, a Saturday, which was the same day the U.S. military captured Saddam Hussein.
